Toledo, OH, Love Story and Proposal : Ali and Phil

How They Met:

Phil went to college with Ali’s twin sister and her husband, who, back then, was just some guy. Ali met him once in passing at some party but doesn’t really remember that meeting. After her twin sister and that “guy” got married, they had been thinking about setting their friend Phil up with Ali but everyone was nervous that if things didn’t work out, it would be a bit awkward for either everyone involved or at least someone.

Ali’s sister invited her on a weekend trip to visit her husband in Toledo, OH, but since Ali had to work, she declined. At the last minute, her work had told her she could take the weekend off and as luck would have it, her Dad booked her a flight. On the way to the airport her sister’s hubby texted her saying that they had actually planned to stay in his friend Phil’s family cabin and that they would pick her up from the airport and head down. She didn’t really pack appropriate cabin attire but her sister packed extra sweaters and cute outfits for her, assuring her she was all set.

When Ali and Phil met, there were instant sparks. It was nice to be in the company of a bunch of friends so as to relieve them both of the pressure they felt to hit it off. They all drank mimosas and prepared all kinds of snacks together, which gave the two lots of opportunities for flirting. They even went on a couple of trips to the store together to replenish some of the drink stock. It seemed pretty clear to both of them that there were budding feelings and if not, a clear attraction.

The group went on a hike together to watch the sunset and Ali and Phil spent most of the hike talking amongst themselves exclusively. They asked each other questions about their upbringing, career goals, family, and favorite movies. They seemed to have a lot in common and what was most obvious, was their similar sense of humor. They kept on making each other laugh and would have to help each other remember what they were initially talking about. It was an incredible “first date” surrounded by friends and beautiful Ohio scenery.

How They Asked:

Ali had been waiting for Phil to pop the question for quite some time and felt like it was definitely going to happen but just didn’t know when. They had discussed the idea of marriage many times before, especially once the two of them moved in together.

One Friday night, the two of them had been texting their friend group and were planning out a weekend of hanging out together. All of them had a birthday dinner planned for Saturday night so Friday was supposed to be a little more low-key so that everyone would have energy to celebrate the following evening. Ali and Phil decided to stay in and watch movies.

They watched “The Notebook”, one of Ali’s favorites, and Phil brought up the idea of engagement, since it’s a central theme of the film. He mentioned that because of their busy upcoming year, that even if he wanted for them to get engaged, that they might have to put it off a bit longer and reconsider when things settle down. Ali understood and said that she loved him and trusted his decision either way.

Saturday morning, they lazed around the house and made breakfast, and Phil checked his messages and told Ali that the dinner reservations were actually at a rather fancy place so everyone was getting dressed up.

When they got to the restaurant, they met up with the gang, and saw that everyone was, in fact, dressed up. They were all seated in a private room at the back and everyone was excited to see the menu at this new place. Drinks were ordered almost immediately but there were no menus. Champagne was even brought out, Ali assumed for the birthday reservation, but she was getting frustrated not to be able to look at a menu. She finally called a server over and requested that they bring them.

The server came back with a stack of menus, which were handed out to everyone, but they were short one. Ali waited patiently, since she was still without a menu, and while the server went to go and grab another one, Phil said, “Here babe, you can have mine,” and handed her the menu in his hands.

To her great surprise, when she opened the menu, the pages were covered in pictures of the two of them with a beautifully inscribed message in the center of the pages. Ali was in shock and began reading to herself, while everyone fell silent. She started crying while reading the heartfelt words that were clearly from Phil. He got her to stand up, and he joined her, expressed his deep love for her, and got down on one knee. Everyone cheered and cried as he pulled out a stunning diamond engagement ring. Ali was overwhelmed but managed to say yes. It was a perfect night filled with friends and laughter.
