We met with one of our local jeweler partners and here’s what they had to say:
“One of the most unique and popular places to propose in Ames, Iowa, is The Campanile Bell Tower on the Iowa State University campus. It is the major symbol of the university and fitting for proposals because of its own love story. A student at ISU officially becomes an Iowa Stater when he/she is kissed under the Campanile at the stroke of midnight. So it only makes sense that it would be a popular proposal location as well.” – Ames Silversmithing

“One of our customers hid his engagement ring in a newly built building site and then surprised his fiancee at the location, which happened to be their next office building site.” – Gary Youngberg

How They Met: Alexa and Arnie met while both attending Iowa State University in Ames, IA. Alex’s best friend, who was in the same sorority, told her she knew a guy that would be just perfect for her. A date was set up for Alex and Arnie to go get a smoothie together on campus and the second she saw him, she knew there was something there. They had an incredible first date, connecting over their love of Disney World, sports, and being competitive.
After their first date, it was fairly obvious to both of them that they would start dating each other exclusively. When the Christmas break rolled around, both of them didn’t want to be apart for very long so Arnie offered to drive from his hometown to hers so that they could spend New Years together. They went to a party with all of Alex’s high school friends and after they met Arnie, they all told Alex that it was obvious he was going to be “the one” even though they were fairly young.
They spent the next few years watching movies and going to restaurants, studying for exams and going to parties, working out and trying new activities whenever they got the chance. All their friends referred to them as ‘Arnexa’ and claimed that they were the center of their social circles, connecting all kinds of different people together. A match made in heaven.
How They Asked: Alexa and Arnie were planning a 2-week vacation beginning with a nice dinner in Chicago, and then touring around Yellowstone National Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park, and finishing off in Denver to see some of Alexa’s family and friends before heading back home to Ames, IA. Like so many others, their trip had to be cancelled because of the pandemic but Arnie still made sure they’d have a good time.
Arnie arranged for a special day for his mom to visit the two of them in Ames, IA, and for her to have a girls’ day with Alexa getting their nails done. He had never before organized something like this, which made Alexa a bit suspicious, but she tried not to get too excited. That day, Arnie also mentioned that he had a special dinner planned but wouldn’t reveal where.
That afternoon, the two of them drove to one of their favorite green spots surrounded by open fields and lots of trees. Arnie held Alexa, told her how important she was to him, and that he didn’t want to spend another moment without her. He got down on one knee and asked if she would marry him. Of course, with absolutely zero hesitation, Alexa said yes. To make everything even more memorable, Arnie arranged for a friend of theirs to take photos of the entire proposal! They all went back to Alexa’s parents’ house to a BBQ where all their close friends were waiting to toast to their future together.
