How They Met: Patrick and Sadie met while both attending a college biology class but only spoke for the first time at a party. Patrick walked her safely home but didn’t ask for her phone number, which surprised her. The next week, she received an email from him inviting her and her roommate to join him and his friend for a night of bowling. She accepted the offer and was head over heel in love by the end of the night.
Patrick later attended a grad program at the University of Iowa while Sadie accepted a job in Kansas City. Years later, Sadie began studying at Des Moines University which was much closer to Patrick. She later accepted her first position even closer in proximity to Patrick and they decided to move in together and find an apartment in Iowa City, IA.
How They Asked: Patrick had his original plan to ask Sadie to marry him ruined by her cancelling a romantic trip to Oregon in order to take an exam for med school early. One morning, Sadie had pointed out some hot air balloons outside and they both began talking about taking a ride one day. Then Patrick remembered seeing posters for a hot-air balloon event taking place in Iowa City. He looked it up and sure enough, learned that this event was taking place the weekend before they moved in together and after her exam.
Patrick called a bunch of different balloon owners to see if they could arrange for a ride. All of them seemed to be booked for the event. He then contacted some photographers to see if he could still use the event as a beautiful proposal backdrop. He finally connected with one who happened to have graduated from the same medical school that Sadie was applying to! It was a sign.
The day of the proposal, they spent all day packing up the last few things in Sadie’s old apartment. Patrick made sure that she left herself something to wear for the event and asked if there was some special restaurant she wanted to go to. They made reservations at a nice Italian restaurant downtown.
They finished packing and got to this big open field where the National Balloon Classic was held. Hundreds of balloons were set to launch at sunset, which the photographer said was perfect. Patrick was secretly communicating with the photographer, giving her their exact location. As the sun began to set, the balloons began to inflate. They snapped some pics of their own but Patrick made sure to keep them in a specific location. All of a sudden, Patrick looked Sadie dead in the eye and said her full name. She immediately understood what was about to happen and burst into tears. He got down on one knee and asked her if she would spend the rest of her life with him. Through joyous tears, Sadie nodded and said, “yes”.
