How They Met:
Oliver and Martha met while both working in Ann Arbor, MI, at Google. Coincidentally, both of them grew up in Battle Creek, MI, and got hired at the same time, but never met each other beforehand. A colleague of theirs had a wine and cheese party and they struck up a conversation over two glasses of Chablis, and a beautiful charcuterie board. They laughed and felt like hours passed by so quickly. Although both hesitant to begin officially dating, considering they worked together, they agreed to take things slow and keep it under wraps so as not to make anything interfere with their jobs. After a few years of dating, they decided to get a dog together and it’s been smooth sailing (mostly!) ever since.
How They Asked:
Oliver and Martha have a similar sense of humor. They don’t take themselves too seriously and love to push the boundaries. Oliver would pretend to propose quite often, usually at the oddest of places. He would suddenly drop down on one knee while pumping gas, opening and closing their garage, throwing garbage into the nearby dumpster, you name it! Each time Martha would clarify exactly what she would need in order to be proposed to properly. She had mentioned she wanted to be around flowers, water, and even a marching band!
One year, while on vacation in the Netherlands, the two of them visited the Keukenhof tulip garden and spent the day walking around, looking at all the gorgeous flowers. They walked towards a fountain right in the middle of the fields, and a marching band started their track across the flower path. Oliver knew what to do.
Although he was planning to propose on the trip, he actually claims not having planned this! He immediately dropped down to one knee and asked Martha if she would spend the rest of her life with him. Strangers immediately started snapping photos of the proposal.
