Farmington Hills, MI, Love Story and Proposal: Dwayne and Kayla

How They Met:

Dwayne and Kayla both met back in 2012 at a bar in Chicago. Kayla was visiting one of her best friends who she went to school with back in Farmington Hills, MI, and she was hosting a bachelorette weekend a few months before her wedding. Coincidentally, Dwayne was visiting a friend in Chicago who also had grown up in Farmington Hills, like he had. Somehow, Dwayne’s group of friends decided to drift over to Kayla’s and sort of all started talking in a big group.

Kayla recalls immediately thinking that Dwayne was very attractive and hoped he felt the same, although he didn’t really seem to show much interest. She actually was the one to go over to the bar and order some shots for the groups to take, but Dwayne took the opportunity to go over and help her deliver all of them. Kayla still holds it against Dwayne that he didn’t make the first move, although he claims that the assistance in alcohol distribution was his move. Some move! Nevertheless, they began talking and were inseparable the rest of the night.

When they both discovered that they had grown up living a few streets away from each other, they were floored. How had they never met? They oddly had lots of mutual friends and shared memories hanging out at the same places. They played a few games of pool together and even challenged other couples to games that they ended up winning- Dwayne is a fantastic pool player and athlete in general, while Kayla is a very good supporter and lifter of spirits (her words!). They exchanged phone numbers that night and texted regularly until they got back to Farmington Hills. They started dating almost immediately and fell in love very quickly. To this day, they keep discovering similarities that they both have and hold that bar in Chicago close to their hearts.

How They Asked:

Dwayne had asked a mutual friend of theirs who was a photographer to head out to Belmont Harbor in Chicago at a certain date and time to set up a blanket with rose petals and champagne and pretend to take pictures there.

He asked Kayla a week before if she could clear her Saturday so they could both go on a romantic bike ride. After riding for a couple of hours they ended up at the Harbor and Dwayne knew exactly where to go. Kayla was so surprised that he just went straight for this blanket, sat down, and asked her to join him. All of a sudden she realized what was happening. He told her how much he loved her and that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. Through tears, she said yes. When she saw her custom made diamond engagement ring, she was overcome with emotion and cried even harder. They have pictures of their magic moment to keep forever, thanks to their Farmington Hills photographer friend.
