How They Met:
Colleen and Rick met each other during their freshman year at Oregon State University. They were actually living in the same dorm and got to know each other while playing all kinds of silly games throughout their orientation week.
After graduating college, Colleen’s job moved her up to Seattle, WA, and Rick joined her, able to find work just about anywhere. They’re been best friends for years and continue to develop their relationship. They have a similar sense of humor and can always make each other laugh. They met their first day of college and 9 years later, they got engaged!
How They Asked:
Rick had been offered a job back down in Oregon and was preparing for the big move. Colleen was supposed to join him a few months later. It was a gorgeous summer day in Seattle and the two were spending their last few days together in their home before heading back “home” to Oregon, where they were both originally from.
The couple had been living in a gorgeous apartment in a great building a couple blocks away from the Space Needle. They would spend evenings up on their roof, looking at it and imagining what it would be like to go up there, but because of Rick’s fear of heights, knew it wasn’t going to be something they would ever experience together. There had even been times when they would pass by it on foot, look up, and Rick would start feeling lightheaded just thinking about the way up.
A week prior to Rick’s departure, he told Colleen that on Saturday, he was going to bite the bullet and go up to the top. He wanted it to be one of his last experiences as a Seattle, WA, “local”. Colleen agreed but doubted he would actually go through with it.
The Saturday rolled around and Rick was up and at ‘em, ready to go quite quickly. Colleen also remembers noticing he was a little more dressed up than usual but assumed that he wanted to look a little nicer for one of his final moments in the city. As they headed out and started walking over, Colleen noticed how sweaty Rick’s palms were and how distracted he seemed. She thought it was all quite understandable and expected considering his fear of heights was about to be tested.
They made it through the ticket booth and up the elevator. Lots of people were up there but Rick and Colleen just held hands and slowly walked around. He asked her a few weird and unrelated questions and all of a sudden he was down on one knee telling her how much he loved her. He pulled out a ring box, which fell out of his hands and rolled around a little bit, which made everyone gasp, (considering the height!) but he quickly grabbed it and continued on after some giggles.
All of a sudden, Colleen noticed a photographer had been taking pictures of them the whole time. She said yes, let Rick put his gorgeous diamond engagement ring on her finger, and they hugged. They had a little photoshoot afterwards with a gorgeous view of Seattle, WA, in the background. Their family and friends met them downstairs with balloons and beautiful signs which made the whole experience all the more memorable.
