Vancouver, WA, Love Story and Proposal: Connie and Mark

How They Met:

Mark and Connie met each other in their hometown of Pocatello. Mark attended the same junior high school as Connie’s older sister, so Connie grew up seeing them hanging out together and developed a major crush. Mark, of course, didn’t really pay much attention to his friend’s younger sister and so didn’t really get to know Connie until years later. Connie now confesses that she and her sister made a bet when they were younger as to which one of them would end up with Mark in the end.

Since they grew up in a small town, their parents were all very familiar with one another and both families attended the same church. They were thrown together a lot and hung around the same people. Even when they didn’t have plans to spend time together, they would usually end up bumping into each other around town. Pretty normal, as far as ‘small town living’ goes.

One summer, about ten years ago, Mark and Connie grew closer, seemingly out of nowhere. The summer ended and it was time for Mark to return to school in Montana. Connie moved to Boise and when Mark was offered a job there, she begged him to join her there. Although he didn’t accept the offer, they remained in contact and visited each other often.

Although their relationship had been strictly monogamous up until that point, Connie received a surprisingly forward text message from Mark. ‘Are you single yet?’. She was stunned. She had long since forgotten about her bet with her sister and had become such close friends with Mark. He explained that he noticed that she had deleted pictures of her ex-boyfriend on her social media accounts and wondered if her recent trip to Vegas with a bunch of girlfriends was to, well, celebrate a long-awaited break-up. She pleaded the fifth, but admitted that he was perceptive. She even shared with him the bet that had been made years ago and he assured her that he didn’t send the same text to her sister.

Connie was nervous that if they began dating and things didn’t work out in the end, that she would lose a best friend. She felt compelled to keep Mark in her life, in whatever form, and although she wasn’t really sold on the whole ‘dating’ thing, decided to give it a try. The one condition she had was that no matter what, he would always be her best friend. To this day, he hasn’t let her down. They both moved to Vancouver, WA, and it’s been the smoothest sailing ever since.

How They Asked:

A year ago, Mark and Connie headed back to Boise to be with their families for the Christmas holiday. Connie had always said she wanted to check out the Botanical Gardens there for their holiday display. The idea of beautiful Christmas lights and hot cocoa seemed so romantic. Soon enough, their charming date idea turned into a full out family affair, with both parents and their siblings joining along in the fun.

Although everyone underestimated how cold it would be, they all had a fantastic time together. There was a quaint little bench under some colorful lights that Mark asked Connie to join him on. With their families surrounding them for what was meant to be a holiday photo, Mark got down on one knee and presented Connie with a gorgeous diamond engagement ring he had custom made for her in Vancouver, WA. Full of holiday cheer, Connie said yes.
