Wilmington, DE, Love Story and Proposal : Courtney and Thomas

How They Met: Courtney and Thomas met while Courtney was competing in Wilmington’s beach volleyball facility, Delaware United Volleyball Club. The day’s events and games were complete and Thomas, who was there watching, started playing a game of pick-up with some friends who were at the tournament. Courtney was about to go home, but decided to join for one last game. From that day she and Thomas became friendly but only on a surface level and didn’t really get to know each other until years later.

After graduating, Courtney started playing volleyball at DUVC way more often. One day after playing with some friends, everyone decided to go on an “ice cream scavenger hunt”. Their favorite ice cream store was Dino’s Ice Cream and Water Ice Store, which had hidden free ice cream cards all around Wilmington, DE, in honor of National Ice Cream Day. The group toured around town collecting cards and later ate enough ice cream to feed an army. That day was filled with precious bonding moments that solidified Thom and Courtney’s friendship; the foundation of their love.

How They Asked: Courtney had been feeling under the weather all week so Thomas let her know that he had planned something for them to do on the weekend. He often arranged little surprises and quality-time hang-outs so she was looking forward to Saturday and already in a better mood.

Once the weekend had arrived and Courtney was feeling better, she anxiously awaited for Thomas to return from a haircut. Once home, he had Courtney close her eyes, and when she opened them, her copy of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was sitting in her lap. She flipped it open and found a note, explaining that her scavenger hunt had begun! She was so excited that without reading the first clue, she popped up and started looking around the room.

A bookmark with a fish in the background led her to their fish tank. She gently used a net to turn over their fish’s house and treasure chest when she realized there was something poking out from underneath the tank itself. Her next clue! Four clues later, and they were out of the house! Phew.

They headed to their favorite brewery in Wilmington, DE, called Wilmington Brew Works. Courtney was searching for a specific picture on their wall. They enjoyed a quick beer there (they had to…) and were off to the nearest shopping mall for her next clue. Four more Harry Potter related clues later, they ended up at the volley club where they first met.

At the club, attached to a volleyball strategically placed under a health poster about heart-rate, were coordinates. After putting her nerd skills to the test, Courtney figured it out, and told Thomas where to go. He drove them out to Hidden Pond Trail in Brandywine Creek State Park and they began on their walk together, hand in hand.

Finally, they reached a sign with a Gryffindor scarf wrapped around it. It had an arrow pointing to a bridge. Hanging off the sides of one of the bridge railings, there was a round box. It was painted gold, like the golden snitch! Courtney hurried over.

She noticed a small keyhole and above it, in beautiful cursive were written the words “crack me”. She had collected a key from another clue and was told to keep it in a safe place for when the moment was right. ‘Was there ever a moment that was more right??’, she thought.

She unlocked the ‘snitch’ with her key and carefully opened the golden ball. She was blown away to see the most beautiful diamond engagement ring inside and just about dropped it. Thomas held her shaking hands and helped them become still in his. He told her how much he loved her and how he wanted to spend the rest of their lives finding ways to surprise her like this. It was the happiest moment of Courtney’s life, and it happened right here, in Wilmington, DE.
